Isabella Leonarda • Salmi Concertati
Henrich Biber • Joyful Mysteries (Rosary Sonatas)
We are delighted to have been invited to provide the closing concert of this year’s Shaftesbury Festival of Baroque, exploring the feminine in sacred music.
Isabella Leonarda was a nun in 17th century Novara, who in her spare time wrote and published an impressive corpus of music. Expect energetic rhythms, virtuosic violin playing and more fun than you’d expect a nun to have. Biber's Rosary Sonatas reflect on the experiences of the Virgin Mary through music that expanded the possibilities of the violin.
